Career Summary

David trained with Zaiwalla & Co prior to qualifying as a solicitor with the firm in January 2016. He is an integral part the team and our growing “Russia and CIS” desk. David has excellent commercial awareness and business knowledge having been involved in a number of successful start-up business projects in the entertainment industry, prior to embarking upon his legal career.

Case Highlights 

  • Sergey Polonskiy v Alexander Dobrovinsky & Partners LLP & Ors

Acting for the Defendants in a claim brought before the High Court (Chancery Division) by a Russian oligarch for circa US$400 million alleging misrepresentation, deceit and breach of fiduciary duty arising out of the sale of a majority interest in a Russian property and real estate business.

  • Kazakhstan Kagazy Plc & Ors v Baglan Zhunus & Ors 

Acted for an LSE listed Kazakh and Manx group of companies in a US$300 million fraud claim before Commercial Court against the former shareholders and directors of the group. Successfully obtain and maintained a worldwide freezing injunction against the Defendants in the High Court and Court of Appeal. Successfully obtained permission for service out of jurisdiction and successfully contested the Defendants’ jurisdictional challenge. 

  • Erdenet Mining Corporation v Government of Kazakhstan

Actied for one of the largest mining companies in Asia in its circa US$60 million High Court (Commercial Court) claim against the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan. 

  • Ahmed Adel Abdalla Ahmed & Anr v Sheikh Hamad Al Khalifa

Acting for the Claimants in a Commercial Court claim against a prominent member of a Bahraini royal family for breach of an oral agreement and recovery of an amount of circa. £40 million.

  • Carl James Bowles & Anr (Joint Trustees in Bankruptcy of Georgy Yurievich Trefilov) v George Yurievich Trefilov

Acted for a UK-based company in a High Court (Chancery Division) matter, which concerned a claim by the trustees in bankruptcy of circa. US$15 million from a former Russian billionaire owner of a chain of supermarkets in Russia. The matter involved complex issues of piercing of corporate veil and the ambit of section 307 of the Insolvency Act 1986 with the elements of foreign law.

  • Al Jaber v Al Ibrahim

Acted for a high net worth Saudi Sheikh in a circa. US$60 million Commercial Court claim against two Saudi Businessmen Defendant’s with close links to the Saudi royal family.  

  • LCIA Arbitration

Acting for Russian Claimant in LCIA Arbitration seeking damages of almost USD200 million for breaches of agreements relating to the division of international assets.

  • LCIA Arbitration

Acting for a Russian businessman in a breach of contract claim against an institutional ivestment fund in the amount of circa. US$25 million.
