An 'extraordinary practice' - The Legal 500
Established in 1982, Zaiwalla & Co is the first law firm in the one square mile financial district of the City of London, started by a solicitor born outside of Europe. The practice began in shipping arbitration, working primarily for the Indian Government, before expanding into commercial law.
The firm’s diverse team of lawyers specialise in International Arbitration, Commercial Litigation and Public International Law with sector experience in Banking, Oil & Gas and Energy, Construction, Shipping, Company Commercial and Corporate Crime.
Clients choose Zaiwalla & Co for the firm’s proven experience in turning a difficult case into a success. Time and time again Zaiwalla & Co has set a legal precedent by employing a novel approach to a case that other law firms deemed ‘hopeless’. In fact the firm has now handled over 115 cases that have changed the law, a disproportionately high number for a firm of its size.
The UK’s premiere legal magazine The Lawyer releases an annual list of the 'Top 20 Cases of the Year'. The Zaiwalla team have acted on four cases that, due to complexity or public importance, have been included in these lists. The case of Bank Mellat v HM Treasury was featured twice - Zaiwalla & Co represented the private Iranian Bank who had challenged the UK's decision to sanction it in 2011. The Zaiwalla team fought to success for the Bank in the UK Supreme Court and thereafter issued a subsequent US1.3bn damages claim in the Commercial Court, the largest ever sanctions-related damages claim against the UK Government, which settled in Summer 2019.
The ability to think differently to achieve success is why the firm is chosen not only by companies in the Fortune 500 and Forbes lists, but by SMEs and Private Individuals all over the globe.
