Zaiwalla & Co is acting in Maduro Board of the Central Bank of Venezuela v Guaidó Board of the Central Bank of Venezuela (Court of Appeal) a case which has been featured in The Lawyer's Top 10 Appeals of 2023.
Proceedings were originally brought by Banco Central de Venezuela, represented by Zaiwalla & Co, against the Bank of England in May 2020 over the latter's failure to honour instructions relating to almost $2bn of Venezuela's sovereign funds held in the United Kingdom. Representatives of the purported opposition government intervened, arguing that they had authority to manage the assets. Dealing with novel points of public law and the delicate intersection between law and politics, the case has been to the Supreme Court and is returning to the Court of Appeal in May 2023.
The Lawyer’s list of the Top 10 Appeals features the most important and novel appeals set to be heard in 2023 in the UK Courts, demonstrating Zaiwalla & Co's reputation for being on the cutting edge of complex litigation, and demonstrates that the firm can go toe-to-toe with the giants of the legal world.
