Latin America

Latin America is a growing economy and Zaiwalla & Co has assisted Latin American entities in commercial litigation proceedings before the English Courts and in maritime matters. Our lawyers have broad experience in litigation, arbitration and regulatory proceedings involving Latin American parties and laws, and we have Spanish and Portuguese speakers as part of our team.

Zaiwalla & Co is currently acting for the Central Bank of Venezuela in a dispute in relation to Venezuela’s gold reserves, worth around USD $1.8 billion held at the Bank of England, and in relation to the USD $120 million proceeds from a gold swap transaction with Deutsche Bank.  The Deutsche Bank case relates to a claim in support of an LCIA arbitration.

We have also worked for Compañía Anónima Venezolana de Navegación (CAVN) in maritime matters, including disputes before the English Courts.

We offer a range of services to Latin American private and public sector companies and other entities, including:

  • Litigation, arbitration and dispute resolution proceedings that are subject to English Law or in which the law of the agreement is English law.
  • Sanctions and trade contentious and advisory matters.
  • Maritime law matters, including drafting contracts, advice on international maritime law or handling complex maritime arbitration.
